You might consider a breast lift if
- Your breasts sag — they've lost shape and volume i.e. they look flat and droopy
- Your nipples — when the breasts are left unsupported — fall below your breast creases
- Nipple and areolae point downward
- The areolae have stretched out of proportion to your breasts
- Significant asymmetry of the breasts with one breast very droopy.
Drooping of the breast is usually caused by deflation and volume loss. The only way to replace this volume is by using a silicon cohesive gel implant in association with reposition of NAC. If the person is happy with the breast volume then only a breast lift can be considered. Implant if required can be placed later as a secondary procedure.
Any surgery which entails skin reduction and tailoring of the envelope to get the best possible shape requires incisions. Breast lift surgery involves reposition of the nipple-areola complex ( NAC) which requires a cut around the areola. This incision heals very well and the scar is barely visible as it is round and at the junction of the dark areola and the lighter skin. The other scars which involve a scar below the breast which becomes part of the crease as well as a scar joining these two which is vertical; fade over a few months to a year. The goal of this surgery is to achieve the best possible shape and not worry about the scars as the scars will fade.
Before considering breast surgery you would need the following
- Baseline mammogram or a sonomammogram is needed before surgery.
- An MRI scan of the breasts is recommended in people who have a family history of breast diseases.
- Aspirin and other blood thinners have to be stopped prior to the surgery.
- If you smoke, you need to stop smoking 2 weeks before the surgery.
Soreness and swelling remain for a few weeks after the surgery. Bruising is also possible. Scars fade away over time but don't disappear completely. You might be able to return to work within a few weeks. Avoid strenuous activities as any activity that could raise your pulse or blood pressure for at least two weeks. If there is any warmth and redness in your breast or you have a fever, this might be an indication of an infection. In such a situation contact us as soon as possible.
